Working in publishing doesn't necessarily mean securing a permanent job at a publishing house. Freelancing is commonplace in the industry and can offer greater flexibility in terms of when and where you work. So, what does it take to be a successful freelancer in publishing?
In this webinar you will hear from three highly experienced freelancers on the role of freelancers in publishing, how to set up and run a profitable business, developing client relationships and more.
The webinar will be hosted by Petra Green, Head of the PTC and herself a freelance marketing, research and digital consultant. It should be a lively and interactive discussion, with plenty of time for your questions.

Meet the panel
Caro Drake
As an in-house editor and manager, Caro worked on a wide range of academic books, journals and illustrated trade titles. For 15 years at Cambridge University Press she trained copy-editors and proofreaders, and co-updated the current edition of Butcher’s Copy-editing. As a freelance, Caro works with publishers, educational organisations and industry bodies.
Alysoun Owen
Alysoun is an experienced publisher and project manager of print and digital products. Through her consultancy, she works with publishers at the forefront of digital innovation, including Bloomsbury, Class Publishing, Oxford University Press and Springer Nature. As Editor of the Writers' & Artists' Yearbook, she speaks at conferences, literary events and on university courses.
Heather Rawlin
Heather first worked in-house at a firm of typesetters, where she was a project manager, taking academic publications from manuscript through to print-ready and digital formats. She started her freelance editorial business, Future Perfect in 2015, and works with a mixture of academic publishers, educational institutions and commercial businesses.
What you will need to join the event
To join the webinar, you will need access to a computer or laptop with a camera and microphone. You will need to activate a free Zoom account to join the course. This takes two minutes and does not require any payment. It is purely for administrative purposes.
